Shanandoah Sterling (owner of Sterling Weddings) and I chatted recently about her work and I don’t think I can quite express to you you how much I would want her to be my officiant at my wedding if I could do it all over again. She knows what’s important and she makes sure you remember it amongst the hubbub of wedding planning. She centers people, works magic in the quiet moments and makes sure you feel completely connected to your ceremony. That’s saying a lot, isn’t it?

What makes Shanandoah special is the lengths she goes to make each ceremony a customized and thoughtful reflection of the couple. She encourages her couples to write personal vows, allows for couples to incorporate their unique traditions and cultures, asks the parents for words of wisdom to be used in the ceremony, and helps couples savor the engagement period. I especially liked her “keepsake vow booklet” idea. She takes all the literature (vows, readings, words of wisdom, blessings, etc.) that will be used in the ceremony and keeps them in one beautiful booklet; this is then given to the couple to keep after the wedding.

Shanandoah, who performs Native American ceremonies and is part Native American herself, allows couples to incorporate any traditions they see fit for their ceremony. If a non-Native American couple wants a Sage or Ring Blessing, they can have it because it is THEIR ceremony. Unfortunately, this concept seems so foreign to many other officiants. Perhaps one of the most touching ceremonies she performs is the Wedding Blanket ceremony. As the couple searches for a blanket for the ceremony, they must be represented individually and together in some aspect in the actual blanket. What a beautiful way to symbolize that the two people getting married are important on their own and as a couple.

Your take-away from today’s blog is that you do not have to do anything in your ceremony other than give a verbal consent to marry but with a committed and flexible officiant like Shanandoah, you can make it yours in so many unique ways. The invitations, the linens, and the DJ all come second to the reason you are marrying each other. Make sure you align yourself with someone who truly understands that on a deep level.

As you can imagine, the process of designing and executing these very special carpets is labor intensive but I think Events by Showstoppers founders Jim and Ken really have a passion for it. Here’s what they had to say when I asked them a few questions about their work:

KG: You always seem to be on the cutting-edge when it comes to floral design. Where do you get your inspiration from?

J/K: We get our inspiration from all kinds of sources. One source is from our love of old classic movies. We love to incorporate, for example, lighting effects we see in old ” film noir ” movies from the 40s and 50s. Some of our best inspiration comes from the old classic biblical movies where we get great ideas for fabric draping, unusual color schemes, and other lighting effects. The half circular rose petal carpet we produced for a PB&G shoot at L’Auberge ( a few issues ago ) was actually inspired while watching Cleopatra. I designed the carpet like an Egyptian jeweled collar. When I explain the inspiration for this design, people immediately ” get it .”

KG: How long have you been doing rose petal carpets and what do you love most about them?

J/K: For about 4 years. I especially love the process of drawing the concept, selecting the colors and calculating the quantity. Seeing the final result and how it pleases the onlookers is very fulfilling.

KG: What challenges do you face when creating rose petal carpets and how do you overcome them?

J/K: Wind. You don’t overcome it. You have to go with it.

KG: If you could create your dream rose petal carpet, what would it look like?

J/K: A kaleidoscope. Lots of interesting things can be done.. especially indoors.

KG: What floral trends are you seeing for Winter ’11/Spring ’12 weddings?

J/K: I don’t know about other designers but we are interested in one color ( monochromatic ) color schemes with multiple, muted derivatives of that color, combined with various tones of grey. Like muddy mustard colors combined with charcoal and lighter grey. Also interested in complimentary and split-compliment schemes like mustard colors against raspberry and fuchsia with grey or silver.

What we found is a simple approach to an often complicated process. The bold move to create 4 distinct wedding experiences for brides is nothing short of genius since the focus is on the bride and her priorities. This approach screams “Destination Wedding” to me since the planning seems very streamlined.

The first experience is  “Green” and although we hear this term often these days, the entire experience is designed by Troon for a couple who seeks an eco-friendly wedding. Many of the menu items are from locally grown sources such as Four Peaks ale mustard, Arizona Heritage beef and Fossil Creek goat cheese. The bar options are all organic and/or practice sustainability; the “One Bottle, One Tree” program sponsored by Trinity Oaks winery tells you Troon is serious about maintaining the green elements brides want.

Next is the “Modern” experience which is for a couple who wants a cutting edge and trendy wedding. With this choice your guests enjoy food stations that include a Bruschetta Bar (yum!) and made to order Caprese Salad  station. The trendy vibe continues with swanky liquor options and a “Prohibition” Cigar and Cocktail bar.

If you are more of a laid-back and fun type of couple, the “Social” experience may be right up your alley. This is for the couple that wants to have a great time with their guests at a beautiful location with delicious eats but doesn’t want to fuss over the details.

And finally, there’s the “Traditional” experience that caters to the bride who wants no classic wedding detail forgotten. It’s a pretty straightforward experience but there are cool enhancements like the Bubble Bar (a champagne bar that offers fruit purees to add to your bubbly) and a Venetian Table, which is a decadent sweets spread.

So one questions lingers: what if you want the appetizers from the Social experience, the bar from the Green experience and the enhancements from the Traditional option? Don’t worry! Troon wants you to have the wedding you envision so they have created an option to mix and match! Perfect.

A friend told me about Susan Woodward  and I knew instantly that I needed to be the friend who tells YOU about her work. They are simple and powerful at the same time.  Check out Susan’s paintings:

Here’s a bit about her process: I start with either taking the photo myself or using a photo that the client submits to me. I draw the image with pencil onto cotton fiber watercolor paper. I lay in light washes of watercolor paint and build up to heavy darker tones. It usually takes 1-5 hours to complete a painting. I sign the bottom with the name of the subject,the year and of course, my signature.

Here’s a really sweet one of a father and daughter…perfect Dad-of-the-Bride gift, no?

I would be remiss if I didn’t steer you towards Etsy, the fantastical wonderland of all things creative. I found these really cool and modern wall art pieces in the Etsy shop NiceDay4AWhiteWedding ; they make a lovely backdrop to an altar, can be used as reception decor and will ultimately be part of your new home decor. They also make a perfect anniversary gift. It’s impossible for me to choose which I like best- I’ll leave the hard work up to you!

Idea #3 is to combine artwork and your wedding vows. Art Vows has a ton of design options so no matter what your decor, you can probably find a design that fits in with your style. I think this makes a great housewarming gift to give the newlyweds. Here are just a few of the designs available:

Well preparing for a fight and a wedding are very similar, it starts off with finding out who you are going to fight/marry. I had that down so that was no trouble. I had found the perfect opponent : )

Getting an actual date in the future is the next step, it seems far away, but you never have enough time to prepare.

Look at gorgeous Daisy!

In the months preparing for a fight/wedding there is a ton of work to put in. This is what no one sees behind the scenes. The sacrifices, the sweat, tears, and even some blood from time to time. As the day approaches, there are a plethora of different emotions running through you, excitement, nervousness, fear, fear, fear. This last emotion is really reserved for one of the events, and I can tell you I do not bring fear into the cage.

Fight day/wedding day is the worst day, especially in the morning as far as nerves go. You can’t really eat, everything is running through your mind. I like to keep friends and family around to calm down a bit and to keep it light.

I especially love the girls’ dresses and how shades of purple were embraced throughout

Then the event starts and it your time, you worked so hard to get here and put in all the work. You walk in front of the crowd and face your opponent, and this is where the two differ. Usually I am facing ugly cavemen, and this time I am facing my beautiful bride, and where I am usually looking to knock my opponent out, on this day at the wedding, I am the one knocked out by how gorgeous she is and that I will be able to spend the rest of my life with my favorite training partner, my wife.

Daisy chose for her bridal bouquet plum color calla lilies and the stems were wrapped with a beautiful crystal rosary that her mom found in Santa Fe, New Mexico- love this special touch

The couple was married in front of a custom altar. An antique French Cross along with a Virgin Mary Relic from the Bride’s Family’s personal collection were a sentimental focal point.  The flowers for the ceremony rotunda were natural twigs, grapevine, angel vine with accents of green dendrobium orchids and hypercum berries. The guests and family walked down the aisle to the ethereal music from harpist VeeRona and the Bride walked down to Beyonce’s version of Ave Maria sung by a beautiful vocalist.

A beautiful antique candle altar was offered to guests that wished to say a prayer or a wish for Daisy and Ryan

Seating cards were on silver and gold mini- pumpkins painted by the bride’s niece

Three different table linens were used in shades ranging from lilac to plum. Coordinator Victoria Canada used an abundance of candlelight; gold mercury glass accents were found throughout. The elevated centerpieces were placed upon custom made wrought iron that had an elegant Southwest feel. Lush green and lavender hydrangea, scabiosa pods, bells of ireland, cool water roses, dendrobium orchids, calla lilies, lisianthus, hypercum berries, dahlias and stock were used in the centerpieces and other decor throughout the beautiful Encanterra Golf and Country Club

Action stations featured sumptious food such as Sushi, Kobe sliders, Potato Martinis and more

The big panty surprise is a hilarious take on the garter toss!

It was the night before Halloween so the photo area included many fun props for the guests to use their imagination! And there was a “Man Cave” car lounge with numerous luxury cars and trucks for guests to ooh and ahh over from the Bride’s family dealerships. The music at this area was customized to be more “masculine” artists- Led Zepplin, Springsteen, etc. Cigars were placed out for the gentlemen and ladies.

Daisy changed from her beautiful gown to a gorgeous, sparkly moss color dress to continue the party

Late night mac & cheese and cookies & milk were served as guests were safely transported back to their hotels

Can you see why I was so excited to share Daisy and Ryan’s Real Wedding with you? I would say Ryan won this match!

Time for some fun- first whoopie pies by Sedona Cake Couture, then a sweet game of shell tic- tac- toe  (can you imagine this for a kids table? It’s creative and relatively quiet)

Editor Stephanie Gandy-Riley suggests: Use the scrolls to write your wedding nuptials. Save one scroll to write new promises to each other one year later for your 1st anniversary. Save your “messages” in a bottle for years to come.

 As far as I’m concerned, this is a perfect wedding party/best friend/MOB gift. It’s low cost and you can purchase gift certificates too! Another beautiful and elegant way to add a personal touch to your wedding  is with Lisa Leonard Designs- she makes bouquet charms, hand-stamped tokens,  hand-stamped forks and more.

Super pretty, right? Ok, so here is the amazing Arizona wedding, images from Harrison Hurwitz (Hollye’s are in the Part 2 post). Tiffani and Justin wanted an old Hollywood glam feel so Harrison was definitely the guy to call on. His style is classic and filmy (in fact, he primarily shoots film so the result is a very stylized look that I love).

The floral and cake are AMAZING!!!! Julia Baker is a master at drama and her cake actually tastes good, which is a requirement in my good cake book; the flowers from Angelic Grove are just beyond…

Coordinator Amina Michelle, owner of Some Like it Classic Wedding and Event Design,  shares some of the over-the-top details from Tiffani and Justin’s day:

• Tiffani planned the wedding while Justin was still away on his mission!
•  The bride wanted to use the colors white, black, red and gold. She chose only white at the ceremony, only gold and white at the cocktail hour and primarily black and red at the reception. So dramtic!
• Custom fringed chandeliers hung from the ceilings
• The Hampton’s 10 piece band played  “At Last” for the couple’s first dance
• The head table was a huge 35 person table adorned with linens chosen personally by the bride
• The bars were custom built by Angelic Grove featuring custom tufted wraps
• Guests could indulge in a juice bar that featured 3 ice luges
• The grand dessert bar featured caramel red apples, cotton candy cups, chocolate covered strawberries, cheese cake bites, caramel corn and other pastries
• The room changed to a red hue when the dancing began and custom monogrammed water bottles were available
• The bride and groom’s exit was accompanied by a saxophonist

In case you haven’t been there, Sedona Wedding Studio is a charming place where you can meet all the vendors you would want to meet for your wedding. You can browse samples of vendors’ work, schedule meetings with vendors and be inspired by the sites and smells. OH, the smells! Sedona Cake Couture is in the space adjacent to the studio and there is always something that you just have to try. Look at this irresistable sweets case:

Guests of the bootcamp received invaluable advice from professionals such as Liz Margin, make up artist; Dana DeLuz, Dance Instructor; Andrea Carusetta-Blount, cake artist; coordinators Margaret Van Damme, Judi Bloomfield and Karen Lynn; Bobby Russell, DJ; Katrina and Andrew, photographers and co-founders of Sedona Wedding Studio; and Ken and Jim, floral designers and co-founders of Sedona Wedding Studio.

I am pretty sure Sedona Wedding Studio is going to host another Bridal Bootcamp in the future and if you didn’t go, I urge you to do so. They are the nicest people around, the bootcamp is intimate and personal, Sedona is gorgeous, and every single Sedona Wedding Studio vendor travels, especially to Phoenix.

Here are a few tips that I think would be helpful to anyone planning their wedding, brought to you by the members of Sedona Wedding Studio:

Liz Margin Makeup: stay away from blue undertones since red/pink on the eyes can make you look tired; avoid super bright lips

Dana DeLuz Dance Studio: practice your wedding dance in different surroundings so that the wedding floor surroundings don’t throw you off

Sedona Cake Couture: add crunch to your cake! Use pralines, coconut, etc. for texture

Van Damme Weddings: define your style by gathering materials, pictures, etc. then see what color palette emerges. Once you determine the colors, don’t change! Huge trends: grey suits/dresses, 40′s inspired details, shades of blue, honeysuckle, Hollywood Glam

Sedona Wedding Planner: seek a variety of venue options and determine your priorities.The Forest Service properties are beautiful but you cannot bring anything onto them, including chairs; B&B’s are great for intimate weddings; Resorts offer guest convenience; Private Properties are beautiful but may have noise curfews; Vineyards are great, etc.

Events by Showstoppers: Be open to suggestions about flowers since the time of year determines what looks best; have an idea of what you want and the style you are looking for but be open to the designer’s professional opinions- they are not necessarily trying to get you to spend more money, but they do want the floral to be the best it can be.

Sedona Sounds: Make sure your DJ is professional and practices the pronunciations of names well before the wedding day. Bobby Russell actually tapes the way you pronounce names and practices them!

Sedona Bride Photographers: it’s best to have 2 photographers; consult with your photographer before sending out the invites- time/lighting are important factors; if possible, choose  a prep area with lots of natural light; candles and up- lighting are really important; meet wiht the photographer- do not base your decision on website alone.

And my tip, that I humbly offered to the bootcampers: listen to your gut. If you meet with a vendor and you just don’t feel like you are connecting well, don’t hire them. They may not be connecting with you either. Often, the best weddings are not those where the most money was spent but those that are made up of a team of vendors who really get you and your style.

Finding your dress is one of the most personal things you will do for your wedding and the criteria for what is the “perfect” dress is extremely diverse. You want it to suit you perfectly, whether that means the gown is comfortable, glamorous, princess-like, elegant, or totally original. There are so many options for dresses that you are certain to find the one that speaks to you (or maybe even screams to you!).

The greater-Phoenix area has so  many dress shops that as a bride searching for her one and only, you may be overwhelmed. Today we happily share some alternative avenues for choosing your wedding gown.

First, mosey on over to Brilliant Bridal located in Mesa. Why do you need to check them out? They sell designer dresses “off the rack” for much less than other retailers. How can they do that? They purchase overstock or liquidation dresses from high-end designers. This simply means that you have access to current dresses at much lower prices. The dress you see at the store is the dress you take home (yes, they do alterations).   Look at these gowns from Brilliant Bridal (these are a sample of what you can find, their inventory constantly changes) :

Take note: if you are not ready to purchase a dress at Brilliant Bridal, do not fall in love with a dress there and walk away! Chances are, if you don’t purchase immediately, another savvy bride is going to whisk it away. Luckily, there is a great selection; you will find designers such as Nicole Miller, Pronovias, Amsale and Watters to name a few AND Brilliant Bridal offers a hold option.

Another alternative avenue for outfitting yourself is a brand new designer right here in Phoenix. There is something very special about her- she’s only 15 and her collection is debuting at the Phoenix Art Museum June 4th! How cool to be able to say that you supported a local dress designer who has big dreams AND the will to make those dreams happen? Here is Alaysha in action:

Another way to get a custom dress is through Etsy-the creative and talented people mecca. Heard of Joan Shum who’s creations can be found on Etsy? Neither have I but look at these beauties:

You can also go much less traditional with a cocktail gown- Pronovias has some aisle worthy cocktail gowns that could be just edgy enough for a bride who wants something really special:
