So what are you going to do with this information? You are going to listen to the wedding coordinators who know best. I asked Arizona’s top wedding coordinators what they would pair this lively color with and here’s what they said:

Jennifer Thye of Imoni Events: I would probably pair it with a peach or something soft yet orangey like that. Since Tangerine is such a bold color, you don’t want too many bold colors competing for attention. Or I would get all Cuban on ya and do a bunch of bold colors paired with rusts and browns.

Victoria Canada of Victoria Canada Weddings and Events: Pinks would look great….. Greens- go vibrant. For the daring- I would go with a bold black and white pattern with it- NO, not for the faint of heart but it’s like wearing an all black suit and then popping with some red shoes. Could be fab!

This year’s theme was “The Four Seasons” so naturally there were 4 categories: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall

Winter

Seville Golf and Country Club won 1st Place for their elegant and sparkly Winter Wonderland table:

2nd Place Winter was designed by The Buttes; it’s icy, cool and glam all the way:

3rd Place for Winter was designed by Rendezvous Catering; turquoise is a very trendy color right now and I love how it’s paired with a dark taupe linen:

The Winter category also included cakes. 1st Place went to the JW Marriott Desert Ridge  for this whimsical winter scene (they also won the People’s Choice Cake Award):

2nd Place for Cakes went to Arizona Grand Resort:

Spring

Happy and bright is how I describe the tables in the Spring section of the competition. David Twigger took 1st Place for this lovely and impressive table design. He also earned the People’s Choice Award for tabletop decor.

2nd Place by Cake Hole Project is clever- yes those are carrots used as decor!

Summer

Winning 1st Place for Summer is the Lemonade Stand by YKnot Party Rentals. It’s so fresh and happy!

The Rock Candy Stir Stick is just awesome!

2nd Place in Summer was designed by Encore Creative; it’s like a sunset and I am loving the use of warm and inviting orange

Fall

Fall is my favorite time of the year so it’s fitting that my very favorite table was in the Fall category. Butterfly Petals went wayyyyy above and beyond for this table and I am loving the grey/orange color combo. The mismatched chairs kinda rock my world too (this table won 1st place for Fall):

Trivia at the table for guests to keep themselves busy with…genius!

2nd Place went to J. Starr Events for this warm table- there was actually a TV in the background displaying Fall scenes!

I think we can agree that orange and blue are the stars of this show! These tables are beautiful because of the well-planned designs so if you are trying to be creative with your reception decor, start with color and build!

We had an amazing day of creativity, comeraderie and oohing and ahhing. Victoria Canada, wedding and event design guru, styled the photoshoot so we had a little Q/A:

KG: What was your inspiration for this shoot?

VC: My inspiration was Fran (Phoenix Bride&Groom Publisher)- She had a vision and we just tried to bring it to reality with  our own take on it.

KG: What do you enjoy most about photoshoots in general?

VC: The chance to be creative and the ability to throw some twists at readers  : )

KG: If a bride wanted a French-themed Wedding, what elements do you think are essential to pull it off?

VC: OK- first, let me explain, that creating France in Arizona is SUPER hard.  Knowing that when we went into the photoshoot was key. For any successful wedding, you do need to be honest with yourself on your surroundings. We were at the Wrigley Mansion and that means we had to incorporate some of the beautiful blues at The Wrigley Mansion. They are very bold and may not be the first color thought for a French themed wedding but since I do not like to “match” colors,  I am more about the layering, it worked and was fabulous!

KG: What screams “French” to you?

VC: Poodles, a whiff of Chanel perfume, red lipstick, amazing bread and elaborate fabric in moderation

KG: What trends are you seeing for Fall 2011/Spring 2012 Weddings?

VC: Purple is back. So is citrus. Also, throw the old traditions out the window! Bring in the dogs for the weddings, mix square and round tables, allow guests to mix and mingle at stations and host more of a party vs. your mom’s idea of a wedding.

KG: What element from this photoshoot do you think you will incorporate into future event designs?

VC: I am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with the cake stands- drooling really. They are little bits of jewelry for the cake. I also really love the idea of the floral handle from the bouquet which incorporated costume jewelry. The dresses were ah- mazing too! Drama to the max but still feminine and elegant.

Pretty great insights, right? She’s full of them!

In case you haven’t been there, Sedona Wedding Studio is a charming place where you can meet all the vendors you would want to meet for your wedding. You can browse samples of vendors’ work, schedule meetings with vendors and be inspired by the sites and smells. OH, the smells! Sedona Cake Couture is in the space adjacent to the studio and there is always something that you just have to try. Look at this irresistable sweets case:

Guests of the bootcamp received invaluable advice from professionals such as Liz Margin, make up artist; Dana DeLuz, Dance Instructor; Andrea Carusetta-Blount, cake artist; coordinators Margaret Van Damme, Judi Bloomfield and Karen Lynn; Bobby Russell, DJ; Katrina and Andrew, photographers and co-founders of Sedona Wedding Studio; and Ken and Jim, floral designers and co-founders of Sedona Wedding Studio.

They also set up some cute vignettes throughout the space for wedding inspiration:

I am pretty sure Sedona Wedding Studio is going to host another Bridal Bootcamp in the future and if you didn’t go, I urge you to do so. They are the nicest people around, the bootcamp is intimate and personal, Sedona is gorgeous, and every single Sedona Wedding Studio vendor travels, especially to Phoenix.

Here are a few tips that I think would be helpful to anyone planning their wedding, brought to you by the members of Sedona Wedding Studio:

Liz Margin Makeup: stay away from blue undertones since red/pink on the eyes can make you look tired; avoid super bright lips

Dana DeLuz Dance Studio: practice your wedding dance in different surroundings so that the wedding floor surroundings don’t throw you off

Sedona Cake Couture: add crunch to your cake! Use pralines, coconut, etc. for texture

Van Damme Weddings: define your style by gathering materials, pictures, etc. then see what color palette emerges. Once you determine the colors, don’t change! Huge trends: grey suits/dresses, 40′s inspired details, shades of blue, honeysuckle, Hollywood Glam

Sedona Wedding Planner: seek a variety of venue options and determine your priorities.The Forest Service properties are beautiful but you cannot bring anything onto them, including chairs; B&B’s are great for intimate weddings; Resorts offer guest convenience; Private Properties are beautiful but may have noise curfews; Vineyards are great, etc.

Events by Showstoppers: Be open to suggestions about flowers since the time of year determines what looks best; have an idea of what you want and the style you are looking for but be open to the designer’s professional opinions- they are not necessarily trying to get you to spend more money, but they do want the floral to be the best it can be.

Sedona Sounds: Make sure your DJ is professional and practices the pronunciations of names well before the wedding day. Bobby Russell actually tapes the way you pronounce names and practices them!

Sedona Bride Photographers: it’s best to have 2 photographers; consult with your photographer before sending out the invites- time/lighting are important factors; if possible, choose  a prep area with lots of natural light; candles and up- lighting are really important; meet wiht the photographer- do not base your decision on website alone.

And my tip, that I humbly offered to the bootcampers: listen to your gut. If you meet with a vendor and you just don’t feel like you are connecting well, don’t hire them. They may not be connecting with you either. Often, the best weddings are not those where the most money was spent but those that are made up of a team of vendors who really get you and your style.

Lisa has an amazing range of expressions- I can imagine photographer Chris Richards’ job was especially fun this day!

Cicely made my job super easy today because she asked Lisa all the questions I would have asked her about the wedding day! The Q and A between Lisa and Cicely:

C: What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

L: Seeing Glenn’s smiling face waiting for me at the end of the aisle. Also, sitting with both of our families at the reception at the family table. It really meant a lot to both of us to be sitting next to our parents.

This is quite possibly one of my favorite “just married” shots ever!  

C: Tell me about your floral

L: Our florist was a great family friend from Tucson who I have known for years. She is a very talented florist. I told her the colors that we wanted and certain types of flowers, and she tool care of the rest.

C: Why did you choose Montelucia Resort and Spa to have your wedding reception?

L: The beautiful view of Camelback was exactly what we were looking for the cocktail hour. We wanted to have a classy reception, but still show off the beauty of Arizona. It is a gorgeous resort that offered us everything that we wanted: great food, beautiful scenery, a warm and romantic inside venue, and a great hotel for our guests to enjoy.

C: Why did you pick the ballroom for your reception?

L: We knew it would be cold once the sun went down, so we decided to have the reception inside. The Montelucia does not have a standard, boring ballroom like most other resorts. We were looking for something different in a ballroom…we loved the candle sconces and chandeliers; it made the atmosphere very romantic and cozy.

C: Are their any details you would like to share about your wedding reception?

L: Everything went very smoothly (thanks to Cicely). We had just the right amount of guests that we could make it around to everyone to thank them for coming, yet still enjoy the evening. The band was awesome and everyone was dancing to every song, even after a long break. All of our guests commented on how yummy the food was; we chose short ribs, which is not your classic wedding meal. It was soooo good, and we both definitely ate all that we could! Everything from the candles, the flowers, and the ballroom set a very romantic mood for the evening. The speeches were all very heartfelt and showed how important our family is to both of us.

C: Anything else you would like to share?

L: I highly recommend a day-of planner. I was happy to do most of the planning beforehand, but it was very helpful to have someone else in charge that day and make sure that everyone was where they were supposed to. I got to relax the whole day and hang out with my family and friends without worrying about decorating myself or delivering things. It was great!

C: Looking back what is one thing you would have done the same and differently?

L: I would not change one thing. It truly was a perfect day: beautiful weather, everything went very smoothly, food was great, music was awesome, and the ceremony was very meaningful and memorable.

Notice the eclectic mix of styles and design elements throughout. There’s rustic, vintage, DIY, modern and elegant features all playing very nicely together. Wedding Coordinator Margaret VanDamme has created some amazing wedding inspiration for those of you who want a creative and custom feel at your wedding.

This is one of my all time favorite wedding bouquets- it’s vibrant colors are so happy!

All the food sounds and looks scrumptious but the baskets of peaches and plums have my heart- an edible wedding favor is always best!

Dancing Apache Lodge is unique to Arizona in that it has a rustic charm and lush vineyards…it’s not easy to find landscapes that rival California’s but these do the trick!

What did I tell you? It’s wedding inspiration galore!

A word about whimsy: it can be silly, colorful, energetic and clever. It can also make people feel lighter…at ease…even relaxed. A whimsical wedding allows people to not take themselves too seriously, which I think is a great thing. Our latest issue is chock- full of wedding inspiration treasures and pages 16-19 are where you will find our Style Central feature, conceptualized and styled by Victoria Canada, guru of weddings and style. At a large venue such as the Arizona Biltmore, guests will need to know where to go. Whimsical does not mean unorganized! I absolutely love the pinwheel escort cards because guests are not only directed to where they are seated but also get a “toy” to keep them occupied! The flower cones are cleverly used as aisle decor and if you have a helpful friend, i.e. coordinator who is on the ball, they can then be scattered around the reception room as another layer to your decor.

I can’t help but be delighted when I see the undeniably Spring-like floral designed by Your Event Florist and the cutie pie kiddos (every wedding needs a few of those, right?):

The Sanctuary Resort is modern and hip with breathtaking views that couples love. You can see that Lindy struck the right balance with the vintage beading on her dress and modern feather detail in her hair. So pretty!

What a cool idea- a Soul Mate poem in the back of each menu. It’s thoughtful details like this that make weddings memorable.  

Lindy lost her mother so she set up this sweet vignette: the bright floral arrangement accompanied by a eulogy titled “The Brightest Flower Of Them All”.  This is such a sweet and appropriate way way to honor a loved one who is no longer with us.

Since family is central to Lindy and Jim’s life, they chose to have a Family Head Table instead of a traditional head table, proving once again that this couple prioritized and honored their family in creative ways.

Coordinator Jennifer Thye says, “The colors are quintessential fall colors but we spiced them up a bit with some deep tones and dramatic lighting“. I am a huge proponent of wedding coordinators and this is just more proof why you should hire one for your day: Jennifer managed to take what the couple wanted and add some pop to the overall look of the day. She listened to their desires, made it all happen AND used her own eye for style to make the wedding even more special.

The couple shares a love of Tuscany, triathalons and Slow Food. What’s that you ask? Part of the fun of this post was finding out about this grassroots movement that should have been founded by my husband’s grandfather, Nonno, who is always only halfway done with his dinner while we are scurrying around the kitchen washing dishes and getting ready for dessert. No joke, this darling man from Italy takes his sweet time at the dinner table and I can see why this style of eating appeals to Italians- they sit around and gab, delight in their food and really experience dinner. Michael and Stephanie were so smart to design the flow of their reception around this concept.

I really love how glamour is blended seamlessly with rustic touches- notice the mismatched bottles used on the tables while a shining disco ball and an elegant chandelier hang above. This atmosphere is sure to suggest that guests stay a while.
