Homespun Happiness
The desire for their guests to get to know them in a personal way was the inspiration behind the details in Brooke Morton and Ben Gammie’s wedding celebration.
“Every detail was an extension of us,” recalls the bride, who wed with a lucky Sixpence in her shoe just before Thanksgiving. The pair celebrated their new marriage by bringing everyone together at her family home for a party that was as genuine as the couple themselves.
“The most important thing for us was to focus on celebrating the season, the harvest, and enjoying a wonderful meal together with our guests,” says Brooke. The family garden was decorated with a vintage, homespun air, featuring antique handkerchiefs, heirloom silver, candelabras, and teapots filled with garden roses and herbs.
Dinner featured the wines from both family vineyards. The butternut squash soup included a pear garnish from Ben’s family farm in Ohio. The couple incorporated Texas pecans and beer in a nod to their previous home states. The groom hand-made the dessert and cake stands using wood from a fallen pine tree. The couple had a hand in every detail.
Even finding the ideal table linens became a labor of love. “Instead of renting 20 identical tablecloths,” explains the bride, “my mom and I spent the summer looking for vintage tablecloths and napkins in roadside antique stores.” Their uniqueness brought out an authenticity to the celebration, which was elegant without being pretentious.
“Because we always shop our local Farmers’ Market, we decided to use this theme for our homemade wedding favors. It featured fresh apples from Ben’s family farm, homemade apricot jam, fresh produce and dried herbs and seedlings all harvested from my mother’s garden, narcissus bulbs, homemade labels, planting instructions and a chalkboard market sign as a finishing touch.” The favors were fabulously displayed in the father of the bride’s antique Model A Ford.
Many of the hand-made items from the reception now have places of honor in the Gammie home, where they serve as reminders of one incredible day in November.
